Armed Forces Night Headlines a Full Friday of Racing at Can Am
The 2026 season has been exciting during the first three weeks with some familiar faces making a statement early on.
Last week in the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modified division Billy Dunn notched his 72nd career Modified win at Can Am, but it was not easy. Dunn started up front and held off several challenges in the early laps from Lance Willix and eventually points leader Tim Fuller. A restart just past the halfway point gave Fuller one more chance at the leader but Dunn proved to be too much as he scored his second win in a row. Fuller crossed in the runner up spot with Lance Willix third. With the win Dunn sits 4 points behind Fuller in the chase for the track title.
Tyler Stevenson made it three different winners in three races in the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman division on Friday night. Stevenson took the lead before the halfway point from early pace setter Eric Nier. Stevenson encountered lapped traffic near the end allowing Nier to close in, but Stevenson held on for his 9th career Can Am win over Eric Nier and Jessica Power. The win vaulted Stevenson into the point lead by 6 over defending track champion Gavin Eisele with Nier 8 points behind in third.
Josh Verne Jr. has owned the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car division and was able to take advantage of some misfortune from early race leader Mark Webb, to grab the lead and go on to score his third win in the first three races and 21st at Can Am. George Sanford put on a late race charge to come home second with former Sportsman track champion Josh VanBrocklin third. Verne has a 30 point lead over Andrew Hennessy, George Sanford and Ken Klinkowsky, who are locked in a three way tie for second in the standings.
Mason Rogers is also unstoppable in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman. The 11 year old driver out of Lafargeville took the lead at the start of the 15 lap feature last Friday and never looked back, scoring his third win in three events and 7th of his Limited Sportsman career at the speedway. Lyle Robinson and Cayden Graham completed the podium.
It was a battle of teammates in the 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar division as Jock Symonds and Kevin Greenfield went at it for the win. The only two winners in 2026, put on a great battle and got close at the finish, but Symonds prevailed for his second win in three weeks. Kevin Greenfield and Jared Gilson completed the top three. Symonds leads the title chase by 24 points. Kevin Greenfield and Jared Gilson are currently tied for second at 148 points, with former champions Francis White and Tony Frezzo tied for 4th at 140 points.
What to watch this Friday night:
- Billy Dunn scored his 2nd win of the season last Friday night putting him at 72 career Modified wins at the Can Am Speedway. With a win this weekend, he will tie the record for the most wins all time with Hall of Famer Pat O’Brien who has 73 career wins.
- Mason Rogers could break the record for the most consecutive wins in a season in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman Division this weekend. Last week he joined five other drivers who have won three straight races in the division at Can Am. Those drivers include Rylee Gill, Hunter Schwander, Kevin Warren, Logan Brown and Genavieve Bartlett.
-Will we see a fourth different winner in four races in the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman division? Tyler Stevenson joined Brennan Moore and Gavin Eisele as 2026 feature winners one week ago. The record for most different winners to start a season was 9 set back in the 2002 season.
-Can Symonds be stopped? Jock Symonds has scored two wins in the first three races in the Sundance Leisure Thundercars, with a worst finish of second on the year. The strong start has put the Lafargeville New York driver 24 points ahead of the field, as he pursues his first Can Am track title.
-Finally….Can anyone stop Josh Verne Jr. in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car division? The Theresa native has won the first three races of 2026, bringing his Can Am win total to 21 overall. Verne goes for four in a row this Friday. The division will hold its 50th event this weekend.
The close battles for wins and the track titles rolls on this coming Friday night as we pay tribute to our Armed Forces at the Can Am Speedway with all five divisions on the card. Gates open at 5pm with racing starting at 7pm.
