Dunn Doubles Up as Can-Am Stars Put on Mother’s Day Thriller

The 52nd season at the Can Am Speedway has been full of excitement and it was much the same this past Friday night in all five divisions. With it being Mother’s Day weekend, everyone was driving extra hard to win one for Mom.

Billy Dunn took the lead in the 25 lap Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTCar 358 Modified feature, with Remington Hamm, Lance Willix, Shaun Shaw and Jackson Gill the early top 5. Dunn had a fast car and was running away from the field, while behind him Lance Willix was on the move taking second from Shaun Shaw, with Tim Fuller moving to the number 4 spot. Andy Howard slowed on the back stretch bringing out the yellow flag, which gave the rest of the field a shot at the leader. On the restart Dunn moved back in front, but Tim Fuller was on the move, taking second from Willix and Shaw, as he tried to keep pace with the leader. As Dunn pulled away, with Fuller trying to stay close, the battle was on from 3rd on back with Willix, Shaw and Chris Raabe all going after one another while Remington Hamm also joined the fight from 6th. A quick yellow flew on lap 17 set up one final chance for Tim Fuller and the rest of the field to challenge the race leader. When the green flew Fuller made his move but Dunn was too strong as he pulled away for good in the closing laps. In the end, the defending track champion held off another quality field for his 2nd win in a row and 72nd of his Can Am Modified career. Tim Fuller, Lance Willix, Shaun Shaw and Chris Raabe rounded out the top 5.

The 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature saw Eric Nier grab the early lead over Tyler Stevenson and Owen Nier. Eric was quick in the early laps running the inside lane while Tyler Stevenson was quick on the outside and looking for an opportunity. On lap 4 Stevenson was able to take the lead off turn 4, while Eric Nier remained close but behind the top two, Jessica Power and Gavin Eisele were on the move as they battled for a top 5 finish. With 8 laps to go Tyler Stevenson was on cruise control, but Eric Nier was within striking distance as he tried to keep the leader in his sights, while Jessica Power, Owen Nier and Gavin Eisele all continued their battle. In the closing laps, Tyler Stevenson tried to get by lapped traffic but was having some struggles, which allowed Eric Nier to close quickly. On the final lap Eric Nier made a bid for the lead in turn three but it wasn’t meant to be as Tyler Stevenson became the third different winner in three races this season. Eric Nier crossed in second ahead of Jessica Power, Gavin Eisele and Owen Nier.

The start of the 20 Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car feature saw Andrew Hennessy do a full 360 spin on the back stretch while running up front in the 18 car field. Amazingly nobody came into contact and Hennessey was able to keep the car going and remain in the top 10. While that was happening, Mark Webb was leading over Josh Verne Jr. and Tucker Donath. Webb looked strong but slowed off turn 4, handing the lead to Josh Verne Jr. and the yellow flew. When the green came back out Verne continued to lead but behind him George Sanford was on the move taking second from Donath and began his run at the race leader. As the laps clicked off George Sanford did everything to try and catch the defending track champion, but on this night, Josh Verne Jr. proved to be too much for the field, scoring his 3rd win in 3 starts and 21st in the Crate Sprint Car division at the speedway. Sanford settled for second ahead of Josh VanBrocklin, Tucker Donath and Ken Klinkowsky.

Mason Rogers has been the dominant driver in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman class at Can Am. He took the lead at the start of the 15 lap feature, with Lyle Robinson and Cayden Graham chasing him. Rogers has been one of the drivers to beat in the opening races across the northeast and this night was no different as he pulled away from a solid field. Rogers remained in front but Robinson was doing all he could to run down the leader. A caution was something others were looking for, to try and catch the leader, but that was not meant to be on this night. In the end Mason Rogers continued his dominant run scoring his third straight win, tying the consecutive win record in the class with five other drivers. Lyle Riobinson, Cayden Graham, Mike Durham and Haily Brownell completed the top 5.

Jock Symonds was the driver to beat in the early laps of the 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature, with Kevin Greenfield and Jared Gilson completing the top three. Symonds had a fast car and was looking to end the race quickly, pulling away from the field. On lap 10 a yellow flew giving Greenfield one more shot at Symonds. On the restart he made the most of it, challenging several times, but Symonds remained in control and was not letting this race get away. Over the final laps Jock Symonds pulled away so grab his second win in three weeks. Kevin Greenfield, defending track champion Tony Frezzo, Jared Gilson and David Rasmussen finished out the top 5.

Next week we honor our Armed Forces as it will be Armed Forces Tribute night Friday with all five divisions on the card. Racing starts at 7pm.
