Dunn Returns To Winning Ways At Can-Am
LAFARGEVILLE, NY - The night was sultry. Despite the hot and humid weather, fans were in for a treat with a full lineup of racing at Chapmanâ€™s Can-Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, NY. Billy Dunn had been kept from victory lane for a couple of weeks at Can-Am, but could not be contained Saturday night. Breaking out from a ninth position start, Dunn sliced and diced his way to victory. Dunnâ€™s performance may have been eclipsed by David Rogersâ€™, who was a two-feature winner on the evening, heading to victory lane in both the Pro Street Stocks and the Sportsman Modified classes. Other winners included Hunter Schwander in the Novice Sportsman class and Matt Rainville in the ModLites. The Thunder Car feature race was suspended in lap five after a wreck. That feature will resume next week.
Novice Sportsman Modifieds took to the track for two qualifying heat races. 00 Bill Matteson and 18 Justin Gadbaw were the top two cars to begin the first heat. At the drop of the green flag, Matteson shot to the lead, taking the low line around the track. Gadbaw got loose in turn one and drifted to the back of the pack. 0 Joe Wilcox moved into second position on lap two, while 4x Mike Gadbaw grabbed onto third position. The battle for second erupted in lap three, as Gadbaw and Wilcox sparred. Gadbaw moved into second position by lap four. At the checkered flag it was 00 Matteson, 4x Gadbaw, and 0 Wilcox in the top three positions.
The second heat race for the Sportsman class had 76G Skylar Greenfield and 15 Greg Henry in the top two positions. 30 Hunter Schwander wasted no time moving up from third to first, completing the feat by turn two. 24 Jordan Kelly was also moving on up, advancing from fifth to second in just two laps, with Greenfield sliding back into third position. 12s Shaun Shaw was hard charging as well, moving up from seventh position to third by the checkered flag. Top three finishers were 30 Schwander, 24 Kelly and 12s Shaw.
The beefy 358 Modifieds were up next for two heat races. 93 Ryan Bartlett and 16 Lance Willix II started the first heat race in first and second positions respectively. 93 Bartlett retained first place, while 39 Tyler Bartlett moved up to second position after starting third. 9 Billy Dunn, who started sixth, picked off the competition one by one, moving up to second position by lap three. Two laps later, Dunn made a play for first, and succeeded, relegating 93 Bartlett to second position. At the checkered flag, it was 9 Billy Dunn, 93 Ryan Bartlett and 39 Tyler Bartlett in the top three positions.
The next 358 Mod heat race had 51x Brady Gill and 27w Nick Webb starting in the top two positions. 27w Webb led lap one, preferring the high line around the track. 24 Pat Dupree moved up from fourth position to second, while 51x Gill drifted back to third. The drift continued, as 10 Josh VanBrocklin attempted a pass through turn two, forcing Gill to back off to avoid going up over the berm of the track. Dupree made a play for the lead in the final lap and successfully passed up Webb for the position. At the checkered flag, it was 24 Pat Dupree, 27w Nick Webb and 10 Josh VanBrocklin in the top three positions.
Pro Street Stocks took to the track next, with 32 Ryan Shanahan and 11 Tiger Chapman started in the top two positions. Chapman leaped out to the lead, while 3 Rick Dusckas moved up to second almost immediately. Chapman had his hood blow off through turn two of the first lap. In lap two, 272A David Rogers got loose in turn four, bringing out the caution. 1x Mike White took advantage of the caution to move up to third position, after the restart. At the checkered flag it was 11 Chapman, 3 Duskas and 1x White in the top three positions.
The second heat race for Pro Street Stocks had 45r Preston Forbes and 19 Robert Scott in the top two starting positions. 3k Shawn Kirby, starting in fourth, moved up to second in two turns, challenging for the lead by the conclusion of lap one. By lap three, Kirby was successful in his pass attempt, shifting Forbes into second and 19 Scott into third position. Thatâ€™s how it would remain until the checkered flag, 3k Kirby, 45r Forbes and 19 Scott in the top three positions.
The packed class for the night was the Sportsman Modifieds, with seventeen cars racing in two qualifying heats. 97 Mike Mandigo and 71 Delbert LeGrow Sr. started the first heat race in the top two positions. LeGrow was beat off the line for the lead, but recovered quickly, moving into the lead before the close of the first lap. 60 Jackson Gill and 621 Brian Hudson moved up quickly to take over second and third positions, respectively. Gill took advantage of a lap three caution and restart to grab the lead, while Hudson challenged LeGrow for second. By lap five, Hudson succeeded with a pass attempt, moving LeGrow back to third. 24 Jordan Kelly was next to challenge LeGrow for position, attempting a pass on the final lap. It was a race to the line, with LeGrow able to fend off Kelly and retain a third place finish. 60 Gill and 621 Hudson finished first and second, respectively.
The second heat for the Sportsman class had 85 Haiden Burdick and 12 Troy Fleming starting in first and second positions. Burdick was quick off the green, launching into sole ownership of the first place position. 38 Zach Sabotka moved up from third to second, hot on the heels of Burdick. 25 George Sanford advanced from fifth to third by lap two, challenging Sabotka. 271 Tiger Chapman wanted a piece of the action, charging up from seventh to third by lap four. After a lap five caution, Burdick retained the lead, with Sabotka in second and Chapman in third. Thatâ€™s how it would remain at the checkered flag.
ModLites made a return to Chapmanâ€™s Can-Am Motorsports park, a single heat race had 19 Frank Nortz and 73 Rich Rainville starting in the top two positions. 03 Matt Rainville wasted no time moving up from fourth to first, with 1w Brad Reif taking ahold of second position in the first lap. 19k Kaylie Nortz had mechanical issues and needed a hook to the pits in lap four. On the restart, 03 Rainville jumped to the lead, while 1 Reif challenged mightily. At the checkered flag, it was 03 Rainville and 1w Reif in the top two positions, with 73 Rich Rainville in third.
Thunder Cars took over the track next, with 94 OJ White and 17N Justin Nier starting in the top two positions. They raced three wide for a time, with 17N Nier, 16 Matt Marcinko and 42 Lyle Robinson running the breadth of the track. Marcinko managed to move into second, but Robinson would not relent. Robinson cut low under 94 White on the final lap, taking over the lead through turn two. At the checkered flag, it was 42 Robinson, 94 White and 16 Marcinko in the top three positions.
The second heat race for the Thunder Cars had 17 Mike Greenfield and 32 Chuck Monica starting in the top two positions. Greenfield jumped into the lead at the drop of the green, while Monica challenged immediately. 2s Gary Sharlow moved up to third from a fourth place start. By lap three, it was a three-way race for the lead, with Greenfield, Monica and Sharlow going three wide for a time. Sharlow was able to sneak by on the low side, gaining the lead by lap four. At the checkered flag, it was 2 Sharlow, 32 Monica and 17 Greenfield in the top three positions.
A dash for cash took place during the intermission for the Pro Street Stock class. It came down to 11 Tiger Chapman and 272 Dave Rogers for the final dash. It got interesting when both cars spun out in turn two. Though Rogers got back on the track first, Chapman got going through the gears and up to speed more quickly and was able to take the checkered flag and the cash.
The first of the feature races for the night was the Novice Sportsman class. 00 Billy Matteson and 76G Skylar Greenfield started in first and second positions. Row two had 0 Joe Wilcox and 30 Hunter Schwander in third and fourth positions to start. Matteson took a commanding lead, while Schwander moved into second position by turn two of the first lap. In lap two, Matteson got a little loose through turn two and Schwander pounced on the opportunity to take the lead. Meanwhile, 12s Shaun Shaw was busy making his move, advancing from tenth position to start, all the way up to fourth by lap five. 4x Mike Gadbaw spun through turn four on lap seven, bringing out the caution. The caution erased Schanderâ€™s extensive lead, putting him side-by-side with Matteson for a restart. It was Matteson that had reason to worry, however, as 24 Jordan Kelly and 34 Eric Nier moved past Matteson for second and third positions. Another caution brought another restart, this time with Jordan Kelly and Hunter Schwander side-by-side in the top two positions. Schwander got the advantage at the green, though Kelly was not willing to give up without a fight. They moved away from the rest of the pack by lap twelve. Meanwhile, 4x Mike Gadbaw moved into fifth position on the final lap. At the checkered flag it was 30 Schwander, 24 Kelly, 34 Nier, 00 Matteson, and 4x Mike Gadbaw in the top five positions.
Next up were the 358 Modifieds, with 93 Ryan Bartlett and 51x Brady Gill starting in the top two positions. Row two had 27w Nick Webb and 39 Tyler Bartlett in third and fourth positions. 9 Billy Dunn, the track points leader, started in ninth place. At the drop of the green, before even making it to the flag stand, 10 Josh VanBrocklin and collided with 39 Tyler Bartlett in turn four. Bartlett headed to the pits on the hook, while VanBrocklin was able to head there under his own power, sheet metal peeled back from his car. On the restart, 93 Ryan Bartlett retained the lead through the first lap, with 9 Dunn on the charge from back in the pack. At the close of lap two, Dunn was right behind Bartlett, with 57 Rylee Gill in third and 27w Web in fourth. A battle for fifth position involved 16 Lance Willix and 51x Brady Gill. Dunn made his move in lap five, snatching away the lead from Bartlett. A lap six caution put Barlett and Dunn side-by-side for a restart. At the green, Dunn leaped into first, while Gill went low for an aggressive pass of Bartlett for second. As the field began to spread around the track, it was Dunn, Rylee Gill, Ryan Bartlett, Willix and Brady Gill in the top five positions. Dunn continued to put distance between himself and the rest of the pack by lap sixteen. With five laps remaining, Dunn was moving into lapped traffic, but it still wasnâ€™t enough of an obstacle to allow second place 57 Rylee Gill within striking distance. At the checkered flag, it was 9 Billy Dunn, 57 Rylee Gill, 16 Lance Willix II, 93 Ryan Bartlett and 51 Brady Gill in the top five positions.
The Pro Street Stocks rolled onto the track next, with 32 Ryan Shanahan and 11 Tiger Chapman in the top two starting positions. 19 Robert Scott and 45R Preston Forbes started in row two, third and fourth positions, respectively. At the drop of the green flag, Chapman thrust to the lead, with Shanahan settling into second. Forbes moved into third, while 3k Shawn Kirby charged into fourth, after starting eighth. By lap three, Kirby moved into third. The top four cars went four wide through turn four in lap four. Kirby emerged as the leader, with Forbes in second. Chapman had to settle for third, while Shanahan shuffled back into fourth. In lap seven, Shanahan got loose through turn four and went into the wall. Shanahan took the car pit-side, to bend back some of the sheet metal on his front fender. Shanahan was able to rejoin at the back of the pack. On the restart, it was Kirby back in the lead, with Forbes champing at the bit in second, looking for his opportunity to pass. Another caution brought the field back together. Kirby retained the lead, but it was Tiger Chapman who charged up into second place. 1x Mike White slid into third, while 272 Dave Rogers grabbed fourth. Preston Forbes spun out on the front straightaway with a flat right front tire, brining out the third caution of the race. On the restart, Chapman and Kirby squared off, racing side by side for nearly two straight laps. Rogers, in third, patiently waited for an opportunity to attack the leaders for first place. By lap fifteen, Chapman grabbed the lead and Rogers grabbed second position. One lap later, Rogers took the lead and Kirby took second place. Chapman and Kirby exchanged sheet metal right in front of the grandstands on lap seventeen, with Kirby emerging in second place. At the checkered flag, it was 272 Dave Rogers, 3k Shawn Kirby, 11 Tiger Chapman, 1x Mike White and 3 Rick Dusckas in the top five positions.
Sportsman Modified cars rolled out next, with 85 Haiden Burdick and 71 Delbert LeGrow starting in first and second positions. 60 Jackson Gill and 38 Zach Sabotka filled in row two, in third and fourth positions. The green flag unfurled and the top three cars went three wide through turns one and two. Burdick emerged as the leader, with LeGrow in second. 25 George Sanford moved up from seventh to second by lap two, while, 57 Anthony Stockman charged up from eighth to challenge Sanford for the position. By lap four, Sanford faded back into the pack and Stockman took over second position. Sabotka sparred with Stockman all through lap five until a caution flag brought the racers back together for a restart. Stockman and Burdick restarted in the top two positions, with Sabotka and 44 Dave Rogers in row two. On the restart, 271 Tiger Chapman was spun by 25 George Sanford. Sanford was penalized and sent to the back of the field for the contact. Stockman took the lead on the restart, with Burdick in second. But Dave Rogers would not be denied, he pulled into the lead just before yet another caution flag came out. Rogers and Stockman squared off on the restart, with 60 Jackson Gill and 85 Haiden Burdick in row two. Rogers sprung into the lead on the restart, but was barely able to get a lap under his belt as the leader before another caution came out. 85 Burdick and 38 Sabotka got together to trigger the caution, with Burdick heading to the pits and Sabotka heading to the back of the field as a penalty for the contact. Rogers remained the leader on the restart, with Stockman and Gill battling for second. Racing was slowed with another caution when 7x Justin White spun out on turn three. With just nine laps in the books, the race was approaching nearly as many cautions. Through the litany of cautions and restarts, 21 Taylor Caprara had weaved his way from a seventeenth position start all the way up to fifth place. By lap ten, Caprara was the owner of third place, with his eyes on second. With five laps remaining, it was 44 Rogers, 60 Gill, 21 Caprara, 271 Chapman, and 57 Stockman in the top five positions. With one lap remaining, Sabotka went up over the edge off turn one, brining out a caution. This destroyed Rogersâ€™ lead and brought the field back into formation for another restart; this time in a shootout for the win. All eyes were on the leaders, Rogers and Gill in row one and Caprara and Chapman in row two. Rogers got the lead at the green, while Caprara grabbed second for a moment. Gill wrested second away at the checkered flag, leaving third for Caprara, fourth for Chapman and 621 Brian Hudson finishing in fifth, while 44 Dave Rogers headed to victory lane.
ModLites buzzed onto the track next, for a twelve-lap feature race. 03 Matt Rainville and 1w Brad Reif started in first and second positions, with 73 Rich Rainville and 19 Frank Nortz in third and fourth positions. 03 Rainville leaped to the lead, while 73 Rich Rainville captured second position by lap two. By lap seven, Reif was challenging 73 Rainville for second position. By lap nine, it was 03 Rainville, 1w Reif and 73 Rainville in the top three positions. A lap later, Reif dropped back into third again. At the checkered flag, it was 03 Matt Rainville and 73 Rich Rainville in first and second, separated by mere inches. 1w Brad Reif took the checkered in third.
The final feature for the evening was the Thunder Cars, with 32 Chuck Monica and 17 Mike Greenfield in first and second positions and 26M Phil Desormeau III and 16 Matt Marcinko in row two, occupying third and fourth positions to start. At the drop of the green, Monica took the lead, while Desormeau and Greenfield battled for second. Monica and Greenfield sparred for first by lap three, with Marcinko moving into third. 42 Lyle Robinson was a hard charger, moving up to third position, before Marcinko and 2s Gary Sharlow played bumper cars, sending Robinson back into the pack. A wreck in turn four sent cars helter skelter across the track. Lyle Robinson spun into the infield in front of the grandstands, while Mike Greenfield took damage as well. Sharlow went hard into the wall out of turn four, bringing out a red flag, stopping the race in lap five. Sharlow was able to climb from his car, though he looked a little worse for wear. Sharlow left the track in the back of an ambulance, for precautionary purposes. Racing was suspended at lap five because of the lack of ambulance on site, due to the accident. The race will be completed next week, picking up with positions as they stood in lap five.
