O'Brien Halts Dunn's Win Streak At Can-Am

LAFARGEVILLE, NY - The threat of rain loomed large over the evening’s racing, as many of the tracks in Northern New York were closed due to weather. It was a bounty night on driver Billy Dunn in the 358-Modified feature. The rules were straightforward: Billy Dunn had to start last in the feature, and he had to finish, in order for the extra cash bounty to be paid out. The top three finishers could earn bonus money should they all beat out Dunn on the night. Should Dunn win the feature, he would get the full bounty.

Winners on the night included: 1x Mike White in the Pro Street Stocks, 26M Phil Desormeau III in Thunder Cars, 24 Jordan Kelly in Novice Sportsman, 44 David Rogers in Sportman Mods (pending tech), and 17D Danny O’Brien in 358 Small Block Modifieds, claiming the bonus bounty for besting Billy Dunn.

HEAT RACES
The first of the heat races for the evening was the Novice Sportsman Modifieds. 30 Hunter Schwander and 00 Billy Matteson started in the top two positions. Schwander shot out ahead as the green flag waved. 99R Anthony Rasmussen, starting in eleventh, immediately fired up to second place. The field was stretched around the entire track at the checkered, where 30 Hunter Schwander took first, 99r Rasmussen took second and 24 Jordan Kelly finished third.

Next up were the 358 Small Block Modifieds for one of two heat races. 1 Craig Collier and 51 Brady Gill started in first and second positions. Gill shot out to the lead immediately, while 10 VanBrocklin catapulted up from fifth to second by the end of lap one. 16 Lance Willix II moved up from sixth position to third, but was immediately challenged by 17D Danny O’Brien for the position. By lap four, VanBrocklin challenged for the lead, but got loose through turn two and fell back in the pack. O’Brien continued his charge in lap four, passing Willix and gaining on Gill. On the final lap, O’Brien attempted a pass low for the lead, but Gill was too fast. At the checkered flag it was 51 Brady Gill, 17D Danny O’Brien and 16 Lance Willix II in the top three positions.
The second heat for 358s had 39 Tyler Bartlett and 93 Ryan Bartlett in the top two positions. At the drop of the green flag, Ryan Bartlett took the lead, while 9 Billy Dunn launched from sixth to third, by the back stretch of lap one. Half way through the heat, it was 93 Bartlett, 39 Bartlett and 9 Dunn in the top three positions. That was how it would stay at the checkered flag.

Thunder cars took to the half-mile oval next, with 94 OJ White and 11J Justin Burns starting in the top two positions. Though Burns grabbed the lead early, it was 17n Justin Nier who moved into first by lap two, with 32 Chuck Monica in second, while White settled into third. 16 Matt Marcinko moved up from seventh starting position to fourth, challenging White for the third position by the final lap. At the checkered flag it was 17n Nier by a front bumper, 32 Monica in second and 16 Marcinko rounding out the top three.
Sportsman Modified was a packed class, with four heat races. 57 Anthony Stockman and 91 Josh Reome started in the top two positions. Reome, returning to racing after a big wreck the previous week, shot into the lead through lap one, while Stockman settled into second place. 25 George Sanford retained his third place starting position as the field began to spread out around the track. At the checkered flag it was 91 Reome, 57 Stockman and 25 Sanford in the top three positions.
The second heat for Sportsman Mods had 81 Tyler Reynolds and 44 Dave Rogers in the top two starting positions. Rogers was shot out of a cannon at the drop of the green flag, taking sole possession of the lead with nary a contender. 21 Taylor Caprara moved up from sixth position to third, by lap two, challenging Reynolds for second. Caprara would dive low, while Reynolds stayed high, the left front wheel lifting from the track surface as he powered out of the corners to keep his position. On the final lap, Caprara tried once again to pass, but Reynolds was able to keep him at bay. At the checkered flag it was 44 Rogers, 81 Reynolds and 21 Caprara in the top three positions.
Heat number three rolled out next, with Fox28 Jeff Stevenson and 24 Jordan Kelly started in first and second positions. 17 Tristan Draper moved up from fourth to second on lap one, while Fox28 Stevenson moved out ahead of the pack by several car lengths. 21H Andy Howard improved from sixth starting position to third position by lap three. As the field spread out, it was Fox28 Stevenson, 17 Draper and 21H Howard in the top three positions. It would remain that way at the checkered flag.
The final heat race for the Sportsman Modifieds had 35 Thomas Cook and 38 Zach Sobotka in the top two positions. At the drop of the green Cook shot out ahead to the lead. 271 Tiger Chapman Jr. and 60 Jackson Gill got together through turn one, sending Chapman up onto two wheels. He was able to recover and stay on the track, even as 99r Anthony Rasmussen spun through turn two, bringing out the caution flag. On the restart, Chapman moved up from sixth to third, and challenged for second position a lap later. By lap four, Chapman was challenging Cook for the lead, taking the high line around the track. Meanwhile, 1 Jack Meeks had moved up from fifth position to third, challenging the leaders for position by lap five. At the checkered flag it was 35 Cook, 271 Chapman and 1 Meeks in the top three positions.

The last heat races for the evening involved the Pro Street Stocks. In the first of two heats for the class, 272 Ryan Shanahan and 19 Robert Scott started in the top two positions. Scott grabbed ahold of the lead through lap one, with Shanahan settling into second. 3k Shawn Kirby moved up a position to third, and was hot on the heels of Shanahan by lap three. At the checkered flag it was 19 Scott, 272 Shanahan by barely a front bumper and 3k Shawn Kirby in the top three positions.
The second Pro Street Stock heat had 45R Preston Forbes and 83 Milt Combs in the top two positions. At the green flag, Forbes grabbed the lead, with Combs in second. 4 Mike Durham retained his third place starting position as the field began to stretch out through lap two. Combs liked the bottom line, while Forbes ran high. With one lap to go, Combs moved into the lead, passing low. 1x Mike White challenged for third, taking the position at the line over Durham. At the checkered flag it was 83 Milt Combs, 45R Preston Forbes and 1x Mike White in the top three positions.

07/09/16 Can-Am Winner - Rylee Gill- Dash-For-Cash 358 Modified
The crowd was given an extra treat with a dash-for-cash run by the 358 Small Block Mods. It was a single elimination bracket, straight-up drag race around the track, with the winner advancing to the next bracket and the loser heading to the pits. 57 Rylee Gill survived the dash to claim the cash prize.

FEATURE RACES
The first feature of the evening was the Novice Sportsman Modifies. 00 Billy Matteson and 24 Jordan Kelly started in the top two positions. Row number two held 15 Greg Henry and 1 Cole Davidson in third and second starting positions, respectively. Kelly moved into the lead out of turn one, with Matteson settling into second. 21C Jacob Clancy moved up from eighth to fourth by lap two. Kelly ran away with the lead, half a lap ahead of the rest of the field by lap five. 34 Eric Nier and 00 Matteson battled for third position through lap seven and eight, with Nier acquiring the position by lap eight. 30 Hunter Schwander was in fourth with Matteson in fifth by lap ten. A lap eleven caution destroyed the huge lead of Kelly and brought the entire field back together for a restart, with just four laps to go. At the restart it was 24 Kelly, 1 Davidson, 34 Nier, 30 Schwander and 99R Rasmussen in the top five positions. Once again Kelly shot to the front, while Schwander was the hard charger, moving up to second position for a time, but giving way to Davidson and falling back into third. With just two laps remaining, another caution came out. Racing was halted for a time when there was an issue during the caution. 21C Jacob Clancy was black flagged and sent to the pits for running full throttle during the caution. On the restart 24 Kelly was strong once again, grabbing the lead. 30 Schwander moved into second on the final lap, with Davidson in third. 18 Justing Gadbaw had quietly moved through the pack, advancing from a tenth place start to fifth position on the final lap. At the checkered flag it was 24 Jordan Kelly, 30 Hunter Schwander, 1 Cole Davidson, 34 Eric Nier and 18 Justin Gadbaw in fifth.

The 358 Small Block Modifieds launched into their feature next, with 1 Craig Collier and 39 Tyler Bartlett in the top two positions with 51x Brady Gill and 93 Ryan Bartlett in the second row. At the drop of the green, 39 Bartlett shot into the lead, with 24 Pat Dupree charging from sixth to second. A lap two caution brought the field back together. 9 Billy Dunn was the bounty man on the night – he started last, and was tasked with climbing through the field. By the lap-two caution restart, Dunn was already up from seventeenth to thirteenth position. By lap four, it was 39 Bartlett and 93 Bartlett in the top two positions. Another caution in lap six set the field for another restart. 9 Billy Dunn had climbed up to ninth position, while the Bartletts remained in first and second. The racers went three wide through turns one and two on the restart, but managed to all hold without disaster. 51x Brady Gill moved into second position by lap seven and then grabbed the lead a lap later. 25 Bobby Herrington was making noise, moving up from eleventh starting position to third by lap ten, while 17D Danny O’Brien snatched fourth position away from 93 Bartlett, demoting Bartlett to fifth. Falling rain interrupted racing during lap thirteen and the yellow flag came out. At the rain delay it was 51x Brady Gill, 39 Tyler Bartlett, 25 Bobby Herrington, 17D Danny O’Brien and 93 Ryan Bartlett in the top five positions. 9 Billy Dunn was in eighth. On the restart, 39 Bartlett and 51x Gill got together and narrowly avoided disaster right in front of the grand stands. 17D O’Brien took the opportunity to move into second behind Gill. 9 Billy Dunn moved up to fifth by lap fifteen. In lap seventeen, 51x Brady Gill went off the top of the track on the back straightaway and went to the pits. 17D O’Brien became the leader, with 39 Bartlett in second. By lap twenty-five, Billy Dunn had moved into third, supplanting Bartlett. With two laps remaining, 17D Danny O’Brien was half a track away from the second and third positions of 25 Bobby Herrington and 9 Billy Dunn. At the checkered flag, it was 17D O’Brien, 25 Herrington, 9 Dunn, 39 Tyler Bartlett and 24 Pat Dupree in the top five positions. The top two bounties paid out, while Dunn managed third place during a rain-influenced feature.

Next up were the Thunder Cars, with 94 OJ White and 11J Justin Burns in the top two starting positions. 32 Chuck Monica and 17N Justin Nier were in the second row. The race got underway just as the skies opened up, making treacherous turn-two even more so. The race was suspended due to conditions, while the track groomers were brought out to try to keep the track in racing shape. After a delay of twenty minutes or so, racing resumed, with a full race restart. 11J Justin Burns jumped out to the lead, while 17N Nier challenged almost immediately for first. 26M Phil Desormeau III moved up quickly from fifth to second, side by side with Nier as they moved past the leader. By lap four, it was 26M Desormeau in the lead, with 17N Nier in second when a caution slowed racing once again. 32 Chuck Monica was in third hot on the heels of 17N Nier on the restart, while 26M Desormeau climbed away from the field. 11J Justin Burns was in fourth by lap five, with 6D Kurtis Daye moving up from eighth starting position to fifth. By lap seven, Monica made his move, grabbing second place away from Nier. With five laps remaining, it was 26M Desormeau, 32 Monica, 17N Nier, 11J Burns and 6D Daye in the top five positions. With two laps remaining, Daye made his move on Burns and took over fourth position. At the checkered flag it was 26 Phil Desormeau III, 32 Chuck Monica, 17N Eric Nier, 6D Kurtis Daye and 16 Matt Marcinko, who made his move on the final lap to zip past Burns.

The Sportsman Modified class was bursting at the seams with twenty-nine cars entering the feature. 91 Josh Reome and 44 David Rogers started in first and second positions. Row number two had Fox28 Jeff Stevenson and 35 Thomas Cook in third and fourth positions to start. At the green it was 44 Rogers who shot out ahead, while the cars went three wide behind him. Reome continued in second place with Cook in third, when a caution brought the field back together again for a restart. Once again Rogers pulled out into the lead. 271 Tiger Chapman Jr. moved up from eighth to third by lap three, closing on second position. As the field stretched out, it was 44 Rogers, 91 Reome, 271 Chapman, 35 Cook and 57 Stockman in the top five positions. By lap six, Stockman moved up to fourth position. By lap ten, Rogers was catching up to the tail of the field. A lap later a caution flag flew, closing up all of the gaps that had developed through eleven laps of racing. 24 Jordan Kelly went off the back berm and spun out, bringing out another caution one lap later. Rogers continued his dominance off the green, grabbing ahold of the lead once again. Meanwhile, 21 Taylor Caprara moved into fifth position after starting tenth. By lap fourteen 91 Reome recaptured the lead from 44 Rogers. The battle for fourth heated up by lap seventeen, as 21 Caprara and 57 Stockman traded positions multiple times around the track. By lap twenty it was 91 Reome, 44 Rogers, 271 Chapman, 57 Stockman and 21 Caprara in the top five positions. 38J Jarrod Herbison got loose through turn four in lap twenty-one bringing out the caution. He was able to restart at the tail of the field. Rogers poured it on again on the restart, nosing past Reome for the lead just as several cars got together in turn four. 12 Troy Fleming and 621 Brian Hudson were able to continue racing after the wreck, but 24 Jordan Kelly, 21H Andy Howard and 17 Tristan Draper were not so lucky. Each had to hitch a ride to the pits. During the caution, several cars headed to the pits, including the race leader, 91 Josh Reome. This left 44 Rogers in the lead, who, once again shot out ahead on the restart, this time with 271 Chapman right behind him. The battle for fifth had 1 Jack Meeks pushing past 35 Thomas Cook. With five laps remaining it was 44 Rogers, 271 Chapman, 57 Stockman, 21 Caprara and 1 Meeks in the top five. With three laps remaining, another caution flew. On the restart 44 Rogers took the lead, with 21 Caprara moving into second position with 271 Chapman in third. They clocked only one more lap before yet another caution flew. On the restart, Rogers jumped out again, with Caprara in second. 57 Stockman moved up to third, with 1 Meeks in fourth. 180 Aaron Pugh pulled into fifth on the final lap after starting twenty-third. At the checkered flag it was 44 Rogers, 21 Caprara, 57 Stockman, 1 Meeks, and 180 Aaron Pugh in the top five.

The final feature on the night was the Pro Street Stocks with 272 Ryan Shanahan and 19 Robert Scott in the top two starting positions. 83 Milt Combs and 3 Rick Dusckas started in row two, third and fourth positions. At the green flag, it was Shanahan who captured first place, while 83 Combs moved into second. By lap five, it was 83 Combs, 1x White, 3 Dusckas, 45R Forbes and 3k Shawn Kirby. By lap nine, Forbes had moved into third, while White was nipping at the heels of Combs for first. With five laps remaining, White made his move and took the lead from Combs, who slipped back to fourth. 3k Kirby moved into second with 45R Forbes right behind him. The rain began to fall again, slicking the track and slowing the cars through the final laps. At the checkered flag, it was 1x White, 3k Kirby, 45R Forbes, 83 Combs and 3 Dusckas in the top five positions.
