LAFARGEVILLE, NY - The Mental Health Association of Jefferson County and another great crowd witnessed another warm evening of racing action at the Can Am Speedway Friday night. The heat was not only turned up in the air, but the racing on the track was even more intense, which resulted in some new faces cracking victory lane, with the mechanics getting their shot to close out the program.

Mechanics Get Their Turn to Shine During Action Packed Racing Card at Can-Am

Four races down and many more to go in the 2025 season at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York. The theme this year is “The Gloves are Off” and drivers have been fighting hard for wins and last week was no different.

Lance Willix was the star of the show in the special Summer Starter for the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds. Willix grabbed the lead late in the 25 lap feature from Tyler Meeks who looked well on his way to his second career Modified win. Once Willix jumped in front on lap 17 it was all over with as the Theresa New York native became the first ever back to back winner of the Summer Starter and joined Alan Johnson as a two time race winner. Billy Dunn continued his strong start to the year by coming home second, his fourth straight runner up finish on the year with Meeks 3rd, Derek Webb ran a fine race to come home fourth with Remington Hamm a solid 5th.

It's taken a little while for defending track Champion Mike Fowler to get things rolling in the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman division, but after a few tweaks on the set up, Fowler showed everyone he was still here to defend that title. The reigning champ took the lead from early pace setter Frank Sibley just past the halfway point and rolled on to his first win of 2025. Sibley ran a great race coming across the line in the runner up spot with Ryan Shanahan third, Tyler Stevenson came from 9th to finish 4th with last weeks winner Josh Reome coming from 12th to complete the top 5 in the 20 lap contest.

Mike Greenfield had not won in many years at the Can Am Speedway in the Sundance Leisure Thundercars but last Friday he was on his game as he took the lead from 2021 track champion Tony Frezzo and never looked back scoring his first win since May of 2021 at the Nasty Track of the North. Frezzo came home 2nd with two-time winner this year Corey Valade coming across third, Francis White took a back up car from last to finish 4th with pole sitter Timothy Greenfeld 5th.

Who could beat Genavieve Bartlett in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman? Well another talented driver named Eymarah Bowman took that honor and ran to her first career win this past Friday night. Bartlett struggled all night eventually going pit side near the end of the 12 lap event. Bowman had a great night and survived several restarts to score her first ever win. Caleb Howard was close at the finish coming from 14th starting spot to finish second with Mason Rogers 3rd, Brianna Murtaugh 4th and Grayson Soper charged from 12th starting spot to round out the top 5.

When you start racing you begin in an entry level division. Brewerton New York’s Jon Liberty missed that memo and got a Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car to start his career. He took that ride in just his 4th ever race, to his first ever win last week. Liberty battle veteran George Sanford all race long and despite a late race charge, Liberty would hold on for career win number 1 in the 20 lap event. Sanford crossed in 2nd with three-time defending track champion Josh Verne Jr. third, opening day winner Bruno Richard finished 4th while Tucker Donath crossed in 5th.

This week it’s the popular Mechanics Race which was won by Adam Moore one year ago. Along with the Mechanics Race all five divisions will be on the card with representatives from Mental Health Association of Jefferson County on hand as the featured non-profit.

Gates open at 5pm with the first green flag flying at 7pm.
