Fuller, Brown, and Hennessy Continue Winning Ways at Can-Am

The Golden Jubilee Season continued on this past Friday night at the Can-Am Speedway. All 5 divisions saw exciting finishes and some drivers continued their early season dominance, while others finally broke through for their first wins of the new year.

Logan Brown has been the dominant force in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman in 2024 winning 4 of the first 5 events. Other drivers had different plans on this night and one of them was Brady Howard, who took over the lead on lap 3 and started to run away from the field with Anthony Brownell and Logan Brown giving chase. Howard appeared to be on cruise control and was headed for a sure victory, building up a near straight away lead. On lap 10 Patrick Kudrinko spun, setting up one final shot for Logan Brown. On the restart the top two charged into the turn with Howard in command, while Camdin Cook hung on to third. On the final lap Brown managed to pull even with Howard. As they headed to turn three, Howard spun allowing Logan Brown to sneak by on the top side and march on to score his 5th win in 6 events. Camdin Cook was able to get by for second over Anthony Brownell, Genavieve Bartlett and new comer Tim Halsey

Next up was the Sundance Leisure Thundercars and despite being the points leader once again, defending track champion Francis White was still not happy with his season. A victory was what he was wanting, as he charged to the front early in the 15 lapper over Tony Frezzo and OJ White. The defending track champion was fast on this night as he pulled away from a quality field, building up a full straight away lead just past halfway. The battle was on for second third and fourth as Frezzo, OJ White and two time feature winner this year, Damien Bechler were all charging hard for position while Jared Gilson was close by in 5th. No matter how hard they battled, nobody was catching Francis White, as he dominated the field to score his first win of 2024. Tony Frezzo, Damien Bechler, OJ White and Jared Gilson completed the top 5.

RJ Tressider was the star of the show in the first half of the 25 lap Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTCar 358 Modified feature, as he charged out front early over Lucas Fuller, Cameron Black, Tyler Meeks and Dan Beachard. Tressider built up a full straight away lead by lap 12 and was looking like the car to beat. On lap 13 the first yellow flew for Remington Hamm who slowed on the frontstretch, giving everyone a shot including Tyler Meeks who was looking to end a long winless streak. On the restart Tressider led the way but Tyler Meeks was on the move. On lap 17 Meeks made the move for the lead, getting by Tressider and started to run away. Scott Webb would spin in turn one bringing out the next yellow, allowing drivers like Billy Dunn and Tim Fuller to add their name to the list of contenders for the win. On the restart Meeks remained in control but Tim Fuller was on the move taking 2nd away on lap 19, then ran down the race leader. On lap 21 Fuller took the top spot from Meeks, while Billy Dunn charged to third. On lap 21 the good run for RJ Tressider came to an end after spinning in turn 4. Tressider was then hit by Lucas Fuller, who flipped his car and the red flag flew. Both drivers were not hurt in the crash. On the final restart Tim Fuller would pull away from Tyler Meeks, Billy Dunn and the others to grab his 2nd win in a row and 4th in the first 6 races. Dunn got by Meeks to finish second for a third straight week with Nick Webb 4th and Jackson Gill came from 20th to finish 5th.

The Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman 20 lap event also saw many drivers looking to end long winless droughts. Paul DeRuyter has not won at Can-Am since his Limited Sportsman days and led the race early over Josh Reome, Dylan Moore, Owen Nier and Brennan Moore. Tyler Corcoran would experience issues in turn 4 as his driveshaft broke on lap 5, forcing him to be pushed to the pits and out of the event. This gave Josh Reome the clear shot as he went after DeRuyter for the lead. On lap 7 Reome powered by on the bottom to claim the spot and begin to author a dominant performance. Behind him Brennan Moore had charged to second with Mike Fowler, the current points leader, moving into the top 5 and battling Paul DeRuyter for third. It appeared like Josh Reome was going to drive off unchallenged and score his first win in nearly two seasons. On lap 18 that changed as the yellow flew, setting up a wild finish. On the final restart Reome held the lead as him and Moore went after each other off turn two, pulling even down the back straight away. Mike Fowler had also moved within striking distance as they cam to the white flag. Reome held a slight lead, Fowler briefly took second, as Moore got it back off turn two and closed in on Josh Reome. Moore went to the top in turn three as Reome was committed to the bottom, a drag race to the line resulted in Josh Reome grabbing his first win since July 22nd of 2022 at Can Am. Moore settled for second, while Mike Fowler, Gavin Eisele and Tyler Stevenson rounded out the top 5.

The night ended with a classic battle between the top two drivers in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Cars. The 15 lap event saw veteran Ken Klinkowski grab the lead with Andrew Hennessy and Josh Verne Jr. The leader was driving away but Hennessy and Verne would not go away as they closed quickly making it a three car battle. On lap 7 Hennessy made his move for the lead as Verne also charged to second, leaving number one and two in the points to settle it. Over the remaining laps Josh Verne Jr did everything he could but Andrew Hennessy was too strong scoring his third win in a row. Vern settled for second over Ken Klinkowski, Tucker Donath and Chris Nethers

Next week it’s all about the dads as Can Am will celebrate Father’s Day Weekend at the speedway with a full program of racing in all five classes. Gates open at 5pm with the first green flag of the night flying at 7pm.
