Yankowski Conquers tough field and Mother Nature for Super DIRTcar Series triumph at Can Am

The 2025 edition of Showdown in September had a little bit of everything on Friday night. Between Mother Nature paying a visit on multiple occasions during the evening and some great racing action, fans certainly were entertained.
Despite threatening skies the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint cars were set to go for 25 laps and now 4 time track champion Josh Verne Jr. charged to the front of the pack of 17 starters with Tiger Chapman right there with him to challenge. Two fast lanes gave drivers multiple options to get around the speedway and the leaders took full advantage as they pulled away in the early laps. On lap 12 the yellow flew for a small shower, which led to drivers being pulled off the track, as a heavy rain soaked the facility shortly after, leaving many to wonder if we would go back racing. Just after midnight track crews finally finished drying the surface, which changed completely after the rain. When the green flew the action was not over with, as Colton Donath spun in turn four while at the same time, Liam Ladouceur flipped his car in turn 2. Both drivers were ok and headed back to the pits. The race was shortened to 20 laps by officials and when the green flew both Verne and Chapman battled hard, but Nick Webb started to break into the picture taking third. On lap 14 Chapman used the outside lane to get by Verne for the lead and begin to drive away. After some tough struggles this year, Tiger Chapman would put it all together on a wild evening of racing to dominate the final laps for his second win of the season. Josh Verne Jr., Nick Webb, George Sanford and Lee Ladouceur completed the top 5.
The evening shifted right in to the DIRTcar Sportsman Series 30 lap feature event. Right from the start series points leader and newly crowned track champion Gavin Eisele gave up his outside pole starting spot, as he had mechanical problems with his own car. Eisele would start at the back in a borrowed car to try and save points on the night. Up front when the green flew Richard Murtaugh, who enjoyed a great season at Can Am with three wins, took the lead with Shane Pecore and Tristan Ladouceur right there to challenge. The top three drivers were the class of the field in the early laps, while Murtaugh was the best of all drivers as he pulled away to a big lead. Several restarts at the half way point of the race bunched the field up, but it did not phase Murtaugh one bit as he continued to lead with Pecore and Ladouceur close behind. Behind the top three Tyler Corcoran, Jessica Power and Emmett Waldron were trading spots seemingly every lap on a very fast track, as they put on a great show for the fans. As the laps wound down, Richard Murtaugh was looking for redemption after a heart breaking loss in this race one year ago. On this night it was all Richard Murtaugh, as he led wire to wire for his 4th career series win and first at Can Am. Shane Pecore crossed in second once again over Tristan Ladouceur, Tyler Corcoran and Jessica Power. Series points leader Gavin Eisele finished 13th.
Final event of the night was the R.D Hutchinson Memorial 67 for the Super DIRTcar Seres and veteran Jimmy Phelps was looking to get his season pointed in the right direction as he led early over Alex Yankowski, Larry Wight, Jackson Gill and Matt Sheppard. Phelps had a strong car and was looking for his first ever Can Am win but Yankowski was not too far behind as he kept pace with the veteran. The point race was shaken up in a major way as title contender and 10 time series champion Matt Sheppard pulled off the speedway while running in the 4th spot, as Phelps and Yankowski continued their battle up front. A caution shortly after this, brought in a new face to the fight, that being four time track champion Tim Fuller. When the green flew it Yankowski to the lead but Tim Fuller was on the move going from 6th to 3rd, as he quickly closed in on Phelps for second. Slight contact in turn three between the two drivers caused Phelps to slow off turn four and the yellow flew, while under the same yellow, Fuller would head to the pits for a left front flat tire. When the green flew again it was Yankowski in control but Larry Wight would emerge as the newest contender and took the lead a few laps later. Wight and Yankowski had a great back and forth battle for the top spot but Alex Payne was on the move from 12th as he charged to third. The leaders worked traffic and Yankowski would charge by Wight on lap 50 to take the lead, however as Wight fought back he clipped the right rear of the race leader and would fall to fourth with Alex Payne now second and Mat Williamson moving from 15th to third. Over the final laps Yankowski and Payne put on a great battle for the win, but in the end Alex Yankowski would hold on to score his first Can Am win and first points paying win of the year after winning at Volusia in February. Payne crossed in second ahead of Mat Williamson, Larry Wight and Mike Mahaney.
The action continues with the Showdown in September weekend on Saturday night, with the annual John Burr Memorial for the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman and the Ron White Memorial for the Sundance Leisure Thundercars. Also on the card for the season finale is the third appearance of the year for the Empire Super Sprints.
