Final Fight for the Flag: Championship Dreams on the Line at Can-Am Friday
Track championships will be decided in four divisions Friday night at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York. Several titles require simple scenarios to clinch the title, while others are still up for grabs on the evening.
In the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified division Billy Dunn is back in a familiar spot where he has been 6 times in his great career. The Watertown New York driver is looking for his 7th track title with a division leading 4 feature wins and 748 points. Behind him with 718 points is Lance Willix, who is enjoying another strong season in the DIRTcar 358 Modified division. Of his overall 8 wins on the year, two have come at Can-Am and will need to win the race Friday to have a chance at his second track title. Four-time and defending champion Tim Fuller sits 8 points behind Willix with 710 points. Fuller is coming off a win two weeks ago and though he may be a bit out of the title chase, he will look for a 50th Can-Am Modified win this weekend. Dunn and Willix are also in a tight battle for the Hoosier Tire Weekly Racing Series Championship for the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds separated by 4 points. Willix is looking for a third straight title, which will be awarded at the Northeast banquet at seasons end.
Three drivers are separated by 28 points heading into the season finale for the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman class. Gavin Eisele leads the way looking for his first Can Am track title. The Lafargeville New York native, has had a consistent season to go along with his lone feature win on the year on June 6th, which ended a two year dry spell at the speedway. Just 15 points back is Richard Murtaugh who started the year not planning to run full time, but found himself at the top of the leaderboard after two consecutive wins on July 11th and July 18th. The Fulton driver will look to overcome the deficit with another win and some luck on his side for a chance at his first Can Am title. Sitting third is Kingston Ontario’s Jessica Power, who recently ended a six year winless drought at Can Am on August 8th. She’ll need to win Friday night and have some help from her title rivals, to secure a historic first Sportsman track championship.
It's down to a pair of drivers for the championship in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car division. Three-time and defending track champion Josh Verne Jr. is riding a wave of confidence recently. The Theresa New York pilot is coming off a dominant third win of the season two weeks ago, which put him just 10 points ahead of title rival Bruno Richard coming into Friday night’s program. Verne also wrapped up a track title at Brockville last Saturday night with his 8th win of the season. Richard has had a stellar year behind the wheel winning three times this season and has been a steady threat to win each week. Richard will look to add another Can Am title to his resume, to go along with a track title he won in the Pro Stock ranks in 2022. Picton Ontario’s Andrew Hennessy, another three time winner, sits 30 points back of the top two and has had a great year, securing his 100th career win earlier this season on June 13th.
Tony Frezzo looks like he is on his way to his second Sundance Leisure Thundercar championship in his career after a steady season, that also saw him claim two feature wins on June 6th and July 11th. Frezzo, the 2021 champion had a nervous moment two weeks ago, barely making it to the speedway to start the 15 lap event after motor issues, but was able to move through the pack, to claim a third place finish. He holds a 46 point lead over Corey Valade, who is looking for a division leading 8th win on the season and 4th consecutive win, something that was last done by Frezzo in his 2021 championship season.
The Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman division does not award a champion, but two drivers are battling for the most wins in 2025. Genavieve Bartlett and Mason Rogers both come into this weekend with 4 wins this year. Rogers is on a roll in the Northeast, claiming a feature win at Mohawk last Friday during our off weekend. Adding another track where he is the youngest winner of a feature event. Bartlett is also riding a confidence wave, having gone a perfect 10 for 10 in the Junior Unrestricted class at Can Am on the Kart track.
Titles on the line and history will be made this coming Friday night and you won’t want to miss the final regular night of racing for the 2025 season.
