Can-Am Speedway
First Responders Honored as Rogers, Fuller, Gibbons, Verne & Valade Take Victory
Can Am Speedway honored our local heroes this past Friday night as area First Responders were on hand and greeted by fans and competitors for the great job they do helping to keep us safe everyday. They, along with evening Sponsor Whitesboro Plow Shop were treated to another night of great racing action.
Hayden Howard was the early pace setter in the 15 lap Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman with Mason Rogers and Caleb Howard right there with him in the opening laps. Jason Rarick brought out the first yellow on lap two, spinning in turn two. When the green flew Hayden Howard remained in front, but Rogers would take over the top spot on lap 4. Once in front Rogers began to pull away as Caleb Howard and Genavieve Bartlett created their own battle for the runner up spot. Even with one more quick yellow, Mason Rogers was too strong on this night, soring his 4th win of 2025. Caleb Howard, Brianna Murtaugh, Genavieve Bartlett and Mike Durham completed the top 5.
Shaun Shaw had a great car in the early laps of the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified feature as he led early over Scott Webb and Tim Fuller. Shaw was fast but Tim Fuller was on the move to second, then ran down Shaw for the lead. On lap 9 Scott Webb and Billy Dunn tangled, forcing Dunn to have to restart at the back of the field, but he didn’t stay there for long. When the green flew Shaw remained in front but Tim Fuller had a full head of steam on the outside lane and charged by Shaw for the top spot on lap 11. In the meantime, Dunn, the points leader, was on the charge and in 4 laps made his way from 11th to 5th and did not stop there as Fuller continued to pull away, while Shaw and Webb continued to complete the top 3. Billy Dunn was charging forward and would grab third from Webb then go by Shaw for second as he experienced an electrical issue forcing him to the pits. Over the final 9 laps Tim Fuller put it on auto pilot and was well in front to secure his second win of the year and 49th of his Modified career at Can Am. Dunn crossed in second ahead of Scott Webb, Ryan Bartlett and Tristan Draper.
It was a first time in winner in the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman division Friday night. Trevor Gibbons, who’s family has been a staple at Can Am for decades, grabbed the lead early on with Richard Murtaugh and points leader Gavin Eisele right there with him. A quick yellow flew on lap 2 as Eric Nier slowed to a stop on the back stretch. When the green flew again Gibbons continued his strong run as he held off Murtaugh on the restart and started to stretch out his advantage over the rest of the field. The top point drivers were also on the move, as Gavin Eisele was all over Murtaugh throughout the event and eventually made the pass for the runner up spot, but still had to make up a 4 second gap on Gibbons to have a chance at the lead. Jessica Power, third in points, struggled early getting caught behind Eric Nier when he slowed on lap 2, but would rebound to finish 8th after restarting 15th, without help of a caution flag. As the laps clicked off Trevor Gibbons was not worried about points at all and was clearly the dominant car. However on the final lap, a slower car allowed Gavin Eisele to make up several car lengths heading into turn three, Gibbons used patience and would be rewarded with his first ever Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman win. Eisele extended his points lead with Richard Murtaugh third Tyler Stevenson 4th and Frank Sibley charging to 5th.
Josh Verne Jr. has had a solid consistent season in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car division and was fast on the night coming from last to first in 1 lap to win his heat. At the start of the 20 lap feature he did close to the same thing charging from 6th to 2nd on the opening lap as Nick Webb led the way. The lead was short lived as Verne powered by on the high side to grab the lead and run away from a quality field on this night. With a 6 point lead Verne knew the task was simple, win the race, second in points Bruno Richard knew his task was simple, if we can’t win the race, keep the 1V close and that’s what he did as Richard charged to second around Nick Webb but had over a straight away to make up, with three time winner Andrew Hennessy running a strong third. Without a yellow flag, Josh Verne Jr. was not to be denied on this night as he dominated for his third win if the year and 18th career Can Am Crate Sprint Car win, the most all time. Bruno Richard crossed in second, with Nick Webb, Andrew Hennessy and Rachel Zacharias holding on to 5th at the checkers.
The night was complete with a 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature and Corey Valade has been on a roll this season with 6 wins heading into Friday night. The Rome New York driver was on a mission as he moved by early race leader Jared Gilson on lap 5 and began to drive away from the field. Behind him points leader Tony Frezzo had motor issues before leaving for the track and the crew was working quickly to make repairs and get the car to the track. It paid off as Frezzo would start last and make his way forward to the top three by lap 7 and was on the charge towards the lead duo of Gilson and race leader Corey Valade. As the laps clicked off Corey Valade proved he was the dominant driver as he marched on uncontested, to score his division leading 7th win of the year and third in a row. Jared Gilson scored yet another runner up finish over Tony Frezzo, new comer Jacob Kimball and veteran OJ White.
Next week Can Am Speedway takes the night off in preparation for Champions Night. Track titles will be handed out in the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman, Panther Framewox Crate Sprints and Sundance Leisure Thundercars. The Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman don’t run for points but the battle for most wins is up for grabs as Mason Rogers and Genavieve Bartlett will roll into championship night with 4 wins each. Both would love to grab win number 5 and have the most wins on the year, but many are still hungry to get to victory lane.
