The Gloves Are Off: History in the Making at Can-Am Speedway

The 2025 racing season at the Can Am Speedway has been a memorable one and TONIGHT, Monday, August 4th will be a first in track history, which has been much anticipated since its announcement last December.

For the first time in track history the Short Track SUPER Series will make a stop at the Can Am Speedway with plenty of excitement and storylines.

As far as the racing goes the STSS North Regional Series, aside from a Mat Williamson win at Devil’s Bowl back on June 15th, it’s been either Matt Sheppard or Stewart Friesen winning the last five events of the series. Sheppard has the edge in the win category with three series wins in a row in the North Region at Outlaw, Afton and Granby, while Friesen, who is still recuperating from injuries suffered in a crash at Drummond last Monday, has two wins at Fonda and RPM.

Sheppard will be one of the odds on favorites for the “Gloves are Off 51” which pays a cool $5,051 to the winner, however “The Great Canadian Champion” David Hebert has been strong in the North region. Hebert has been in the top 10 in every race and sits third in the standings coming into Monday’s event.

Other notable Modified stars who could play a part in the outcome of Monday’s event include Jack Lehner, Alex Yankowski, Alex Payne, 2012 358 Modified track champion Chris Raabe, Daniel Morgiewicz Jr., Mat Williamson and Anthony Perrego. Throw in mixture of our own track regulars and a strong field will be on hand, making for some great racing action.

Also on the card is the Short Track Super Series North Regional event for the Sportsman which has seen three different winners in the three events run so far this year.

Butchie Irwin claimed victory at Brookfield in May, Tyler Peet got the win at Fonda in June, with Blaine Klinger winning the most recent event at Afton on July 16th. Peet and Klinger lead the series in top 5 finishes with two each heading into Can Am on Monday.

Peet is the currently leads the North Region for the Sportsman by 37 over Blaine Klinger with Joe Toth 50 points back in third. Plenty of series and track regulars are also expected for the $1,051 to win show.

The night will also feature the Sundance Leisure Thundercar division, with Friday night’s runner up and 2021 track champion Tony Frezzo leading the track standings with a solid field expected for the Monday special.

The night will also feature a portable boxing ring with the Watertown Boxing Club on hand and several drivers and other notables expected to do some sparring prior to the racing program. Altmann Aquatics River Ridez and Sam’s Club will have displays in the midway, Harmonny Performing Arts Community will be the night’s featured non-profit.

The first ever Short Track Super Series “Gloves Are Off 51” will be one for the ages and you won’t want to miss out on this debut event. Stay tuned to our website, social media and My Race Pass for updated start times and schedules of events.

Be sure to give the track a follow on our Facebook page and don’t forget to add us to your favorites on My Race Pass to get all the up-to-date results, alerts and media releases at the speedway. To check out everything that’s going on all season long check out our website at racecanam.com.
