From the Flagstand to Fundraising: Can-Am Speedway Goes Green for a Great Cause

We have come to the mid-way point of the season at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York and last weeks racing was exciting as always, with a couple of drivers continuing their strong seasons.

Scott Webb was the driver to beat in the Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds last Friday night. Webb took the lead on lap 10 from early pace setter Tyler Meeks, then held off multiple challenges from Ryan Bartlett and Billy Dunn to score his first win since August of last year. Ryan Barlett came from last to finish second over Billy Dunn, Lance Willix and Willy Decker Jr.

The 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman feature nearly saw a first time winner as Calcium New York’s Frank Sibley was the leader early on and had the race well in hand for the first 15 laps. A caution bunched up the field resulting in two lead changes in the final 5 laps. Keegan Nier briefly took the lead but Richard Murtaugh would charge from third to the lead on lap 18 and score his 2nd win in a row despite a rock being lodged between his back and the seat for the majority of the race. Keegan Nier, Gavin Eisele, Owen Nier and Eric Nier completed the top 5.

Josh Verne Jr. has been running strong in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Cars and last week he showed he’s still got the winning touch as he took the lead from George Sanford on lap 4, then pulled away from Bruno Richard to score his second win of the season and keep the points lead in the process. Richard crossed in 2nd with Andrew Hennessy, Ken Klinkowsky and Tiger Chapman.

Some exciting battles in the Donath Motorworx Sportsman feature go and veteran Mike Durham led the 12 lap feature early on and was once again looking to grab his first ever Sportsman win. A lap 6 restart saw Brayden Bullock take the lead but two laps later 11 year old Mason Rogers charged by both drivers off turn two after a fierce battle. Rogers would march on unchallenged to secure his 2nd win in three weeks. Durham, Bullock, Caleb Howard and Jackson Welling rounded out the top 5.

In the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club one driver kept a streak going, while another one end a streak. Randy Gaudet was able to grab the win in the 70/80s division. Gaudet had not won at Can Am in 25 years since he won a DIRTcar Sportsman feature in September of 2001. Veteran Greg Hale won the 50/60 event marking the third straight year he’s won this particular event. The win also tied Hale for 4th on the track’s all time Vintage Modified win list.

The night finished up with a 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature and Jared Gilson already had a great night going as he won his heat earlier in the night and was dominant in the early laps. On lap 9 third place running Todd Fleury launched a motor off turn four bringing out the yellow. Due to track conditions the race was deemed official at lap 9 handing Gilson his first win of the season and second of his Can Am career.

This week everyone will be able to throw water ballons at Head Starter Mike LaClair before the races to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network. LaClair will then dry off and make his way to the flag stand for a big night of racing as the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprints will hold a Northern Crate Nationals Qualifier with the winner getting a spot in the big event at Ohsweken Speedway in Mid September. A regular card of racing in all other divisions should make for an exciting night of racing.
