Early Season Fireworks Set the Stage for Armed Forces Tribute Night at Can-Am
After such a great start to the 2025 racing season at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York, Mother Nature decided to jump in and literally rain on our fun that was planned for last Friday night. Persistent rain throughout the week and continuing through the day on Friday prompted staff and Management to call off the evening of events. But it’s back to business as usual this week.
Plenty of great stories have come out of the first two races of the season, with new and familiar faces in victory lane, with a few drivers in other divisions, taking home all the glory so far this year.
In the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds Jackson Gill opened up the season winning his first ever Can Am Modified feature over Billy Dunn and Tim Fuller. The very next week veteran driver Lance Willix flexed his muscle as he marched to his first win of 2025 passing Larry Welling Jr. late in the event. Five drivers have top 10s in the first two races with Willix and Billy Dunn the only drivers with a pair of top 5 efforts. Willix leads Dunn at the top of the standings by 2 points.
Tyler Corcoran has won both events for the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman division and both times had to fend off fellow Central New York driver Richard Murtaugh to do it. Corcoran, a now 18 time feature winner and four time track champion, bested Murtaugh on opening day for the DIRTcar Sportsman North Regional Series win. The very next week Corcoran used a three wide move in traffic to take the lead late and the eventual victory and is the current point leader. Corcoran, Murtaugh and Canadian Bobby Herrington are the only drivers with top 5 finishes in the first two races.
Bruno Richard and Andrew Hennessy have wins in the first two races to start the season with Hennessy in command of the points lead at the present time. The Picton Ontario driver now has five wins at Can Am in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car division and leads by four points over Richard and Tucker Donath who are tied for second with three time and defending track champion Josh Verne Jr. 6 points back in 4th. Impressive Sprint Car Rookie Nick Webb currently completes the top 5.
In the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman Genavieve Bartlett has taken the world by storm to start the year, dominating opening night then coming from behind to pass Brianna Murtaugh at our most recent event, with a lap and a half to go to grab the first two events of 2025. Bartlett, Murtaugh along with Mike Durham and now 11 year old Mason Rogers are the only drivers to score top five finishes in the first two races of the season.
Corey Valade may have won the first two races of the year in the Sundance Leisure Thundercars but he didn’t have it easy. The Rome New York driver held off a fast closing Michael Greenfield on opening day for the win while week two he managed to claim the win after an epic side by side battle with 2023 track champion Francis White. Valade is the current point leader by 16 over Michael Greenfield heading into this weekend.
This coming Friday night it’s Armed Forces Tribute night with all five classes ready for battle. All military service members with ID will be admitted free to the grandstands Friday night. In the midway the 10th Mountain Division band will be welcoming all race fans and also doing our National Anthems before the first heat goes green. USO Fort Drum and Watertown Vet Center will be our highlighted Non Profit for the night. Plus, a special demonstration will be taking place at intermission by drivers from Chipmunk Hill R/C Speedway in Theresa New York.
Gates open at 5pm with the first green flag flying at 7pm.
