Remembering “The Flying Frenchman” and His Indelible Impact on Dirt Racing
LAFARGEVILLE, NY – Can-Am Speedway joins the motorsports community in mourning the loss of Ovide Doiron, a pioneering Canadian driver, master engine builder, and 2012 inductee into the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame. Doiron passed away on May 6, 2025, at the age of 84, following a lengthy illness.

Known as “The Flying Frenchman,” Doiron's racing career spanned over four decades, during which he amassed an estimated 300 feature wins and 25 track championships. His remarkable journey began in 1958, and by the early 1970s, he had become a formidable presence on dirt tracks across Ontario, Quebec, and northern New York.

At Can-Am Speedway, Doiron's legacy is particularly profound. He secured 15 feature victories at the track between July 19, 1974, and September 17, 1989, and clinched the track championship titles in 1977 and 1979. He was a fan favorite and a respected competitor among his peers.

Beyond his achievements behind the wheel, Doiron was a highly sought-after engine builder. His technical expertise powered numerous top teams in the region, and he generously mentored the next generation of racers, sharing his knowledge and passion for the sport.

“Ovide Doiron was more than just a champion driver; he was a cornerstone of our racing community,” said Can-Am Speedway Staff. “His contributions to Can-Am and the broader motorsports world are immeasurable. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans.”

Can-Am Speedway extends its gratitude to the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame for their tribute to Doiron's life and career. The article by Buffy Swanson can be found here: Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame. Photo by: Mike Watts
